Just looking at the RTE programme The Frontline hosted by Pat Kenny who sets himself up as the 'champion of fair play'. During the program, he asked a number of educated people the extent to which they understood what was going on in 'Crisis Europe'. They said that they didn't understand.

In Feb 2011 we, in Ireland, elected a new government because, the previous crowd - Fianna Fail & the Greens & FRIENDS - turned out to be a shower of crooks. It wasn't until we had dutifully elected Fine Gael, Labour & FRIENDS that, we realised that all we achieved was sweet fuck all because, we now realise that our public representatives were all in it together. If we had left the 'old crooks' in, it would have made no difference. In fact, the general election was was just a little inconvenience for the shower of shits which we had already elected because, they had to interrupt their gorging themselves in the National Trough in order to continue to gorge themselves.
In Ireland, the main political parties are Fianna Fail, Fine Gael, Labour, Sinn Fein and numerous other idiots called Independents. Basically, and in reality, they are all members of the SCUMBAG party whose only aim after election is to stay elected, screw the poor bastard who elected them, ride off into the sunset with a 'telephone numbers' pension while the fools who thought that they were their 'saviors' can't even put enough food on the table for their kids.

Closure of Columb Barracks, Mullingar

The 'brown envelope' hasn't gone away you know...
The two pics are of Magee barracks in Kildare Town which was closed in 1998. Since then we have heard all sorts of plans from the local 'slimies'/politicans..yeah!!!
They were going to 'transform' the 64 acre site into a new nucleus for the town...social housing, rip-off shops etc.
Magee Barracks was built in 1938 by 'ourselves' and was the most modern barracks in the country.
Later, I myself, was an aspiring Rambo in the Depot Artillery.
Right now this 'facility' is almost in ruins because NO effort was put into it's security. Every window is broken, fittings pulled/dismantled from their original locations with anything made of combustible materials being long gone up in smoke. Kennedy Security made a fortune out of placing a 'man' at the gate of an area of 64 acres.
I am led to believe that Columb Barracks is a 'listed' entity/building which would mean that it's relatively safe from the brown envelope but, it will cost a fortune in security to keep it from being destroyed.

The man seemed to be under the impression that Italy was an exception in the EU. Some people need to get out more often...
Here in Ireland we had our very own political 'sacco di merda' called Bertie Ahern who clung to power like a limpet. Whether we like it or not, we simply HAVE to develope means to get rid of gobshite politicians when they have shown themselves to be totally incompetent. Until mechanisms are implemented to achieve this, you and I and every other citizen will continue to finance legalized crooks beyond their wildest dreams.
Just think...right now there are politicians - elected by you - and their 'elitist' pals online arranging the purchase of nice little properties in which to retire while you have been conned - by them - into buying a home for multiples of what it's worth and won't be paid for in two lifetimes.

WHEN Queen Elizabeth arrives on her historic first visit to this country, could someone take her gently aside and whisper in her ear: "Take us back, ma'am. Please take us back."

Ludicrous, I know, but there are a substantial number of beleaguered residents of this shambolic State who not only harbour regrets that we ever left the economic embrace of Britain, but would gladly return.

No reigning monarch has set foot on Irish soil outside Northern Ireland since George V arrived on the Royal Yacht at Kingstown, now Dun Laoghaire, in 1911. He was enthusiastically greeted wherever he went, just as his descendant will be.

I can't gauge the inner feelings of the people but, as an exile of 35 years, I believe Her Majesty's visit has forged an extraordinary subconscious link in their minds between the current economic shambles and the discredited political system which enabled the virtual bankruptcy of the former British colony.

I'd stake a decent wager that a correctly formulated question on returning to the British economic fraternity, Commonwealth and parliament would elicit a positive response.

Supposing, in my fantasy, Britain agreed to underwrite Ireland's crippling debt in return for assuming sovereign power and changing the colour of the postboxes back to red, what would the response be? Positive, is my hunch.

For it has all gone pear-shaped in the Republic of Dreams. Record unemployment, the return of emigration, the collapse of property prices, the slashing of public services and salaries, tourist numbers at a record low, the indignity of losing sovereignty via a Brussels and IMF bailout, and the depressing resurgence of Sinn Fein in the South.

I'm sure I'm not the only still-proud Irishman at home or abroad thinking the previously unthinkable: why did we leave the British Empire?

Wincing at the memory of the smug, patronising, mewling triumphalism of the Celtic Tiger years, I've been brooding on what has happened to the 26 counties of divided Ireland since independence. With Enda Kenny's new Government grappling with the insoluble financial mess, it is easy to place the blame on the doorstep of decimated Fianna Fail.

As commentator Fintan O'Toole observed before the election: "Ireland has been placed under adult supervision. And that cuts right through to the most tender nerve of a former colony. What colonial overlords tell their subject peoples is: You're not fit to govern yourselves."

Virtually every English person I know has an Irish relative. And why? Because of generations of emigration. A recent history of the motorway system showed thousands of Paddies toiling on the new roads -- some of the half-million men who were coerced into leaving home in the late Fifties and early Sixties.

Our loss was Britain's gain. Think of the Gallagher brothers, Tesco's Sir Terry Leahy, Granada's Gerry Robinson, the Pogues' Shane MacGowan, Paul O'Grady, Paul Merton, Steve Coogan -- all first-generation Irish whose parents could not be given a decent life by the architects of 1916 and their successors.

In 1910, Dublin was a jewel in the empire's crown, economically booming, culturally flourishing, with WB Yeats proud of his new creation, the Abbey Theatre, and a reasonably happy populus.

My paternal grandparents ran a busy grocery and bar in the sleepy provincial town of Cavan. They were quite content to be Irish under the Crown. Then, out of the blue, a group of Irish nationalists seized the GPO in Dublin and started the Easter Rising.

My family, like most of the country, was appalled at the outrage and the subsequent destruction of Dublin.

Looking at faded sepia photographs of Cavan from that time, I see a town adorned with fine public buildings, statues and a pleasure garden. I can't think of a single attractive building put up in my native town since independence. But the extensive Farnham Gardens are gone, as are dozens of pre-independence structures that added grace and dignity to the town.

With few exceptions, this is replicated throughout this Mickey Mouse State. And when there was money, the buildings put up by our new masters were, and remain, a disgrace to art, architecture and urban planning. It is too painful to

even contemplate the hi-tech sheds raised by the Catholic Church in the name of religion.

But the man I blame most for the destruction of Ireland is Eamon de Valera. He instigated a Civil War which claimed more lives than the War of Independence, took power with his Frankenstein's monster of Fianna Fail and promptly went about further offending our former masters in London.

He withheld agreed payments to the British Exchequer, leading to an Economic War with England which financially crippled Irish farmers dependent on Britain for cattle, pig and crop sales. This lasted from 1932 to 1938.

My maternal grandfather, a farmer with a smallholding, was badly affected by Dev's campaign against Britain. He went to his grave cursing Dev for his short-sighted actions.

And the mood music for Dev's messianic drive towards an unattainable Irish idyll was the trudge of thousands of feet towards the English mail boat and the gang planks of transatlantic liners as the best and the brightest headed for Piccadilly or Broadway.

In addition, cordial relations between the English and the Irish suffered greatly. But there was worse to come.

How did Dev respond to the declaration of the Second World War and the dark spread of Nazi evil across Europe? He insisted on staying neutral.

But thousands of young men and women from southern Ireland were allowed to cross the Border and join the British forces. Most of my father's friends joined the fight against Hitler. And when they returned home on leave, they were not permitted to wear their 'foreign' British uniforms in the 26 counties.

While the overwhelming mood in the Republic was pro-British, Dev insisted on maintaining a level playing field for Churchill and Hitler.

Meanwhile, Dev's dream of a United Ireland faded forever as he drove a wedge between the two divided parts of the small island. An uncle of mine made a fortune on the black market smuggling butter, meat and petrol across the recently created Border.

When the Nazis were defeated, De Valera studiously travelled across Dublin to the German Legation to sign the book of condolences on the death of Herr Hitler. How wonderfully correct.

Between an economic war with the old enemy and studious neutrality, De Valera managed to create with Father (later Archbishop) John Charles McQuaid an Irish Constitution (1937) that gave sweeping powers to the Catholic Church in the fields of education and hospitals, consolidating the grip of the priests on the rural community.

The Constitution also lay claim to Northern Ireland, elements of which have been repealed only under the Good Friday Agreement.

The old rascal was still in charge during the Fifties when even more people took flight from his depressed State.

Protestants didn't leave the country en masse. It was just that if they married a Roman Catholic, the children had to be brought up in the Church of Rome.

Meanwhile, the Catholic Church's rigid control of education, orphanages and other institutions created the background for the obscene outrages against children which have yet to be addressed properly by the Pontiff in Rome, Benedict XVI.

Censorship was rampant, and the writings of emerging Irish talent such as Edna O'Brien and JP Donleavy were banned. In 1954 the official government censor banned Eric Cross's The Tailor and Ansty for mentioning a couple who were cohabiting.

De Valera finally retired to the Vice Regal Lodge in the Phoenix Park when he was elected president in 1959. But the political shower that came after him made Dev look like the Dalai Lama. IRA sympathisers like the svelte Charles Haughey. A leader of Fianna Fail, he was Taoiseach three times between 1979 and 1992.

In his first term he vindictively opposed Britain's retaking of the Falklands to get his own back on Mrs Thatcher for not caving in to the IRA hunger strikers in 1980. He also had £400,000 of a £1m debt to Allied Irish Banks cancelled when he said, "I can be a difficult adversary."

The full extent of the Haughey-endorsed backhanders, corruption and dodgy planning decisions is still unclear, but the short man in the expensive hand-tailored French suits was the Godfather of the New Ireland. He created a culture that elevated the wink and nod, the discreet payment offshore, and the pursuit of greed to the level of an art form.

Remember his justice minister's response to being caught on licensed premises after hours? "What will it be, Garda, a pint or a transfer?" Oh, how we laughed!

By the time the Celtic Tiger was a cub, the country was awash with gazumping, diddling, lying, bullshitting and false promises.

The euro created a climate of low interest rates and cheap money. Every three-bed-semi-dweller became a euro millionaire. People borrowed well beyond their annual salaries multiplied three times with a year added for luck. The nation was awash with money. My trips home to this new Nirvana were punctuated with enthusiastic back slaps and, "Sure aren't we a great wee country." It wasn't a question.

I just had a visit from my sitting Fianna Fail TD/MP looking for a vote. He said it was a long time since he saw me and had his little notebook ready to take down details of any issues I might have.
The biggest issue I have is that he was one of 166 clowns who sat with their fingers up their arses - they wouldn't have the brains to notice the discomfort - while this unfortunate country was systematically looted by a shower greedy bastards who shovelled largesse in the form of political donations and brown envelopes to our political parties to the point where our public representatives were merely their minnions. The people that they were supposed to represent didn't figure in any calculations.
Anyway, I did point out some issues which I have been trying to get my County Council to address since 1993. While I was highlighting anti-social behaviour activity in our estate, he got a pnonecall from one of his associates who was walking around the estate while he was in my house to relate that there was a gang of teenagers hanging around. I was just wondering whether he and his group of canvassers had anticipated this scenario. If so, it's a stark indication of what life in Ireland is like for many people living in council estates which have been neglected intentionally by successive governments.
My TD/MP, after I had outlined my problems, offered to help me to get a transfer to another area. This the typical approach to thorny problems. Instead of doing their job by making sure that legislation which they tirelessly keep introducing is properly implemented, they go for the easy way out.
As usual, my man promised to 'look into' my problems and get back to me.
I didn't have the heart to tell him that he wouldn't be getting my vote no matter what he said or promised to do.
With all the rhetorical shite coming from our politicians - sitting or not - it just seems like the same old politics as usual...a waste of time voting.
Fianna Fail and friends have totally fuck up the country and now we're asked to put in a supposedly different regime who will finish off the job SPECTACULARLY!

Before you think derogatory thoughts about taxi drivers you need to know what driving a taxi is all about.
The daytime is the best because most of you customers are sober and the daylight is a great deterrent to someone who wants to pull a trick like not paying or some other stupid scenario. But, at night your vehicle becomes a 'scumbag transporter'.
I drove taxis and buses for years which qualifies me to say that, right now it must be a real nightmare job.
In Ireland we have regulations covering everything but, unless it affects the 'under the table' income of some scumbag politician, regulation means fuck all. A typical example is the 'great work' of our Financial Regulator whose job it was to stop greedy financial cheats from looting the country.
We also have some gobshite regulating our taxi industry...yeah!
The regulation is so 'strict' that you can buy a car, stick a taxi sign on top and clone someone else's vehicle registration plate/number and, away you go.
The chances of being caught are slim and, if you are, the penalty is a 'slap on the wrist'.
If you ask why can't the industry be properly policed you will be told that 'we don't have the resources'.
For fuck's sake, what's complicated about a guy with a camera and a notepad standing at taxi ranks to sus out the 'illegitimates'?
Because of this stupid scenario, a taxi picked up Blathnaid Timothy on Dec 17 2010 and now, into 2011 no one has discovered who the driver of the Mercedes taxi is despite the fact that it was recorded on CCTV.
There was an unfortunate lady murdered in England recently and for days it was a prominent item on BBC/Sky news.
As one of those rare few in Ireland who checks up on the news all the time, I am struck with the dearth of news on the disappearance of Blathnaid Timothy.

'Half' the country is without running water at the moment...that's after two days of rain and the melting of 6in of snow. Apart from leakages caused by the recent big freeze we have known for decades that almost half our domestic and industrial water supply is leaking straight into the ground. This is hard fucking work because, right now I'm pissed and, what's more, I've lost my ability to sllep.
I'm now 62 and have been a keen student of 'Irish pub culture' all my stupid life. In fact, with my repertoire of jokes, anecdotes, and a deep hatred of the country - the vatican - which has REALLY occupied Ireland since 432ad, I'm the 'life and soul' of the party.
The picture is of me in the 'smoking area' of my local pub which I go to about 4 times a year. If the smoking ban hadn't been enacted into law, I would be a far more frequent visitor.

It's no wonder that the Irish pub business is on its knees when customers have to go out into the snow for a smoke.
That 'white thing' that you see at the end close to the fake barrels is SNOW. It's about 3 degrees below in this smoking area. Irish pub 'hospitality' at its best.
For the potential tourist to Ireland, it's important to remember that children are NOT allowed in a pub after 9pm... if you have kids, you can fuck off back to your lodgings.
So, if you are a potential tourist to Ireland and would like to join me for a drink, go to Alaska instead.
If you are caught smoking in an Irish pub you - along with the owner - can be taken to court and fined within a time-frame of some weeks.
Of course, if you happen to be a friend or a member of our 'ruling' party Fianna Fail, you will NEVER be indicted for anything.

The European Court of Human Rights recently ruled that Ireland wasn't up to speed with it's laws governing a woman's right to terminate a pregnancy .

Just got the local advertiser/newspaper in which I came across one page with a large photo of a smiling Emmett Stag (Labour)wishing everyone Happy Xmas crap while further on Áine Brady (Fianna Fail) had the same hollow message. These two 'representatives'- along with members of the the other useless parties - are getting around €122,000 a year and couldn't care less whether us ordinary Joe Sixpacks have a happy Xmas or not so long as they can continue on the gravy train. Unfortunately, this is one of the traditional methods that Gombeen politicians use to get elected and re-elected. Getting a pothole filled in or persuading some fool in the local council to put down expensive cobblelocking instead of ordinary tarmac is another successful little gimmick and, of course, the best method of all is to show up at the funerals of constituents. Another little scam that TD's/MP's use to get votes is to collaborate with local council officials and public servants whereby, the 'customer' will become dizzy in the head taking his/her issue from one office to the other and back again. The 'customer' will generally get nowhere with this approach and will eventually have to go to their local TD/MP who will miraculously have the problem sorted.
This gamut is called constituency work and is what most our TD's/MP's were busying themselves with while the crooked bankers were looting the country.
It's now very rich to hear the opposition parties mouthing off about how they are going to change the political system when it is tantamount to turkeys voting for Xmas.
If the Irish people think that the coming General Election is going to improve matters they're going to be disappointed. All we're going to end up with will be an Irish version of the 'Tower of Babel' where the number one, and only, priority will be to hold on to their ill-gotton seats.

The man from Achill Joe McNamara this morning drove a Cherry Picker into the area of the Irish Parliament/Dail and was promptly arrested and thrown into jail. A few weeks ago he drove a Cement (Bottle) truck up the gates of Leinster House/Dail. On both vehicles he had banners denouncing Anglo Irish Bank and highlighting how the members of our government are gorging themselves at the 'national trough' while announcing a draconian budget which will only serve to make Ireland's poor even poorer.
It's rich that Joe McNamara can be jailed IMMEDIATELY while it will take countless years for any of the banking crooks who were instrumental in beggaring the country to make a court appearance...if EVER!

When you think that these geezers NEVER had to do a decent day's work in their lives, it sure is a sweet deal.
At any rate what's going to happen is that a budget will be introduced in the Irish Dail/Parliament which will further screw what's left of the workers in our diminishing economy and cut the Social Welfare benefits of those who have lost their jobs through our government's ineptitude.
As if this scenario is not bad enough, we will be treated to similar budgets for the next four years while being governed by Fianna Fail's inept replacements who will have their hands tied by the agreement entered into by their predecessors.
That's if Ireland doesn't default first.

I was unemployed back in the 80's when my wife brought home a new baby to a house which was in darkness because we didn't have the resources to pay the ESB bill on time. We were 're-energised' after two days thanks to the assistance - for which I am eternally grateful - of SVP .

It appears that the news that Irish Prime Minister/Taoiseach Brian Cowen may have been drunk or hung over during a morning interview on our national radio station RTE has gone around the world.
Fine Gael TD/MP Simon Coveney appears to be taking the brunt of the blame because of his comments on his Twitter page where he said: "God, what an uninspiring interview by Taoiseach this morning. He sounded half way between drunk and hungover and totally disinterested...".
Whether Cowen was drunk or not is irrelevant because, all he was going to do was spew out the same old shite that Fianna Fail have been allowed to get away with for decades.
This man and his ilk are and, have been for years, living on a different planet than those of us who have to deal with the reality of a nation going down the tubes as a result of our government and friends playing roulette with the financial resources of the country.

This was a great little game and we, the decent people of Ireland who have to work for a living, were prepared to ignore what these sleezebags were up to.
Ah yes! We were all sitting back on our couches engrossed in the football and soap operas which were being beamed to us by companies which were owned and run by the same greedy bastards who were playing the game.
In our wildest dreams and childlike innocence, we never thought that the greedy bastard game would ever affect us because we didn't know that we WERE the pawns in the game and that when most of the greedy bastards ended up owing billions to the banks that we were the guys who would end up paying the tab.
The trouble is, us gobshites don't have the money to pay fast enough to keep the creditors at bay no matter how our 'government' try to juggle the 'running chainsaws'.

Inspections of nursing homes and children's institutions are carried out by the Health Information and Quality Authority but this unit has no remit for people with disabilities.

Why is that the case?
While it's commendable that the world reacted - albeit belatedly - to the recent earthquake, one has to ask: Where was the international community during the time leading up to the quake?
It's a sad fact of life that the do-gooder brigade only turn up when some dire tragedy occurs. Why can't the same effort be brought to bear when it is obvious that a country is being ground into the ground by the stupid politics of more powerful countries?
In the case of Haiti the main culprit is the United States. The result of the meddling of the USA in the affairs of Haiti has meant that the French and Creole speaking population will never get off it's knees because, if the 'brand' of democracy that the USA expects is not likely to be introduced, it's 'fuck them'.
If any government or group of governments had taken a serious interest in the welfare of this miserable 'nation', the quake might not have had such devastating consequences.
I suppose that Fidel Castro has been responsible because he wouldn't allow Cuba to become a slave state of the USA.

Listening to the unavoidable media commentary I would hate to be on a jury where Justice Barry White was presiding because this judge, through his constant interventions, seemed to complicate matters to the point where I understood very little of where he was coming from and I'm sure that some of the jury felt the same.
I still don't understand why this case got so much media attention because, some of us in Ireland are so used to hearing of murders that we don't even bother to read the details.
It wouldn't surprise me if, when he gets out, he goes and gets married again.

An article in today's Irish Examiner is concerned with a recent report by the Standards in Public Office (SIPO) which points out that there is no record of €8.8m which was spent by our political parties in the 2007 general election.
The Standards in Public Office is a joke because one of their responsibilities is to make sure that elected politicians are tax compliant. Shortly before his resignation as Mafia leader and Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern was not tax compliant . Where was SIPO during this period.
For far too long we have accepted that money in large sums given to politicians and their parties was funding for election campaigns.

They gave as 'political donations' €2,500 each to John Bailey to 'help him' get elected. Bailey said that he had objected to the developments but the documents/forms which contained his objections became lost...YEAH!

Ireland is a country where Councillors who, themselves, are Estate Agents, land owners,developers, publicans etc. who vote for their own interests at council meetings.
Most political corruption starts with councillors taking brown envelopes and later if/when some of them become TD's/MP's the same old culture is carried on...only it becomes more lucrative in the echelons of power.
The result is that the poor trusting arsehole who voted for them in the first place very quickly slips off their list of priorities.

The developer scam that cost the state €800m

How it worked:
Fianna Fail and friends got together to borrow money from the Fianna Fail banks to buy land-banks around Dublin and other places at knock down prices. Then Fianna Fail and friends and scumbags from other political parties orchestrated the paying off of local councillors and TD's/MP's so that they would vote in favour of planning applications made by Fianna Fail and friends. After the land-banks had been rezoned, their value ballooned wildly to the point where the original borrowers were able to pay back their loans and end up with millions in profit. Now they had some real money of their own and could also borrow more in order to do the same thing all over again.
But the greedy Fianna Fail bastards weren't happy with that, so they decided to put through legislation to give tax breaks to the developers, who in reality, were themselves and friends.
This meant that, instead of having to pay around 41% tax on profits, the tax was dropped down to 20%. It's been reckoned that this scam cost the country €800m.
In a lot of cases the greedy bastards paid no tax at all because, with Fianna Fail government help, they were able to set up other little scams.
Basically, the whole gamut was a nice little Fianna Fail 'merrygoround' where the select few of our so-called elite could expect a government blind eye to be turned while they were financially raping the country.
AND, best of all, most of these criminals are still in power and fiddling away to their hearts content with hardly a whimper from those who voted them in.
